Where it began
From an idea in Sheffield to a national community.
The Carp Society was founded in May 1981 by Tim Paisley and Greg Fletcher. It grew quickly around a simple idea: carp anglers could achieve more by sharing knowledge, protecting waters and organising together.
The first conference followed that November in Luton, alongside the launch of Carp Fisher. Within a year the Society had more than 800 members; by the end of the decade it had acquired Redmire Pool and established itself as one of the sport’s defining institutions.

The Society is founded
Tim Paisley and Greg Fletcher establish The Carp Society. The first conference, first regional meeting and first issue of Carp Fisher follow within months.
Redmire and a permanent office
The Society acquires Redmire Pool, publishes For the Love of Carp and appoints its first full-time administrator.
Horseshoe secured
Terms are agreed to purchase Horseshoe Lake through long-term member permits, creating a flagship water and lasting home for the Society.
A home at the lake
The office moves to Horseshoe, Junior Carp Schools begin and the lake is registered as a fish farm.
Member accountability renewed
Following a period of stabilisation, the Society returns to a democratic structure accountable to its membership.
Protecting the next chapter
The Society manages remarkable waters, supports learning and gives members a voice in the future of carp angling.
The Society today
